"Death and the Maiden"
A luscious 'art meditation' on the classic theme, inspired by medieval and later memorial sculpture.
This slow-motion, film noir combines a sequence of original poems woven into enigmatic and atmospheric black-and-white multi-layered photographic images.
The poetry is luscious and subtle, exploring the nature of Death, Love, Life, physicality and passion in an optimistic and ecstatic vision.
This is a project I have been working on for the last six years or so.
It layers photographic images and calligraphic text to create a meditative and immersive atmosphere.
The poems are linked, but not necessarily sequential - the book can be opened at any page to explore the images and words.
Words are layered within the images and upon themselves, so that one becomes immersed in the words and phrases at a slower, more profound level than simply reading lines of text.
I have used a couple of different fonts together, both to create an interesting pattern on the pages, but also to suggest the stone carving techniques of the 18th and 19th century good monumental stonemasons.
The book is hardback with dustcover.
