This is a first edition, second impression copy of JRR Tolkien's The Silmarillion published in 1977 by George Allen & Unwin (a William Clowes printing). In good condition with just a few minor condition points to note, detailed below.

The Silmarillion is an account of the Elder Days, or the First Age of Tolkien's world. It is the ancient drama to which the characters in The Lord of the Rings look back, and in whose events some of them, such as Elrond and Galadriel took part. The tales of Silmarillion are set in an age when Morgoth, the first Dark Lord, dwelt in Middle-Earth, and the High Elves made war upon him for the recovery of the Silmarils.

Published and edited by Tolkien's son Christopher four years after the author's death, this comprehensive volume contains a Foreword, Genealogies, Index, Appendix and Maps, and this edition features an impressive large fold out map at the rear (see photos), which is still intact and in good condition.

Inside the pages are clean, bright and tightly bound. Has an inscription at the top of the front free endpaper dated Xmas 1978 but no other writing or markings of previous ownership. The top closed edge is tinted dark blue. With a couple of faint foxing spots to the fore-edge.

The blue cloth covered boards have been well protected by the sleeve, and are excellent, as is the gilt pattern and lettering.

Comes with the original dust jacket which has been price-clipped. With some mild edge wear creasing along the top. With several scuffs to the front spine joint (see photos), which has removed the surface dark blue layer. Overall the jacket remains very smart and presentable with strong un-faded colours.
