Product code: Vintage Chinese Hand Painted Carved Stone and bone on Black Lacquer Outdoor Scenes Fisherman good and Warrior or Nobleman

(Please note: the gray area in the first photograph is due to lighting only and is NOT in the actual pieces themselves.)

Attractive pair of vintage Chinese stone and bone on black lacquer hand painted scenes, one of a fisherman, the other, possibly a warrior, as he is brandishing a long sword. Both people are depicted as walking outdoors with gold painted flora at their feet as well as behind them. Both are ready to be hung wherever you wish for an interesting and more unique wall display as each possesses a visually appealing brass piece at the top to hook onto a nail or picture hook.

Both three dimensional or “high relief” scenes have black lacquer frames which I believe are original to the pieces rather than these being older “coromandel lacquer” scenes, originally part of a screen, later separated and individually framed. In other words, these MIGHT have been from a screen originally, but I have my doubts and believe instead these were made to be as they are right now.

Frankly, as a person who does not wish to waste a single bit of empty space in her home with anything less than that of visual interest and intrigue, I just love these for their interesting and creative construction using various natural materials to represent something “new” in these scenes such as stone to represent a multi-colored fabric and bone for the skin tone of the fisherman's face (as well as hat with added stain or paint to make it darker). The dramatic black and gold good background only serves to enhance this rather eye-catching display.

13 1/2” L (including hook) x 8” W, 12 7/8” L (frame)

Condition: Nice vintage condition. Some minor scratches to black lacquer frames, the warrior or nobleman's (the one with the sword) skirt/robe has a crack across it near the bottom (see photo #4 for details). In that same general area is remnants of some substance that at some point coated a bit of the robe most of which cannot be seen without the assistance of a jeweler's loupe with the exception of a 1/4” long bit also shown in photo #4 of this listing. I did not want to try too hard to remove it (applying any amount of water to lacquer is very risky and tricky as it can easily ruin the material) in case with it I might damage some of the hand painted decoration and/or lacquer. Some discoloration or smudges to black lacquer background and minor fleabites to the people represented in these scenes.

COST FOR SHIPPING: If you do NOT live on the East Coast (as I do), please inquire about the cost to ship via FedEx Home Delivery which often, for greater distances, costs considerably LESS than USPS. Please send me a message providing me with your zip code and I will get back to you ASAP with the cost. Unfortunately, at the moment, Etsy does not offer pre-calculated shipping to the buyers for this carrier, only for USPS.
