Cartoons By McCutcheon by John McCutcheon. Published by A. C. McClurg & Company; 1903.
First Edition.

John McCutcheon was an American newspaper political cartoonist, war correspondent, combat artist, and author who won a Pulitzer Prize for his 1931 editorial cartoon, “A Wise Economist Asks a Question,” and became known even before his death as the “Dean of American Cartoonists.”

McCutcheon moved to Chicago in 1890 to work as an artist and occasional writer for the Chicago Morning News (later named the News Record, the Chicago Record, and the Record-Herald). His first front-page cartoon appeared in 1895 and his first published political cartoon was published during the U. S. presidential campaign of 1896. McCutcheon introduced human interest themes to newspaper cartoons in 1902 and joined the staff of the Chicago Tribune in 1903, remaining there until his retirement in 1946. McCutcheon's cartoons appeared on the front page of the Tribune for forty years.

This is a large, antique, profusely illustrated book of full-page cartoons by the author. Containing over 100 pages of cartoons, this book is a humorous treat in political history.

Bound in a grey cloth, with a large pictorial paste down cartoon on the front cover, showing a smiling country boy holding his hound dog. The covers show some scuffing and bumping from it's long life. The top and bottoms of the spine show damage, with the leafs still securely in place. A name is written on the first blank page. Otherwise, it has clean, unmarked and unpaginated pages. Each page good shows a full-page, black and white cartoon with a small written description at the bottom of each. John McCutcheon brought much joy and laughter to the readers of the Chicago Tribune for decades. His drawings consist of images of humor from daily life, to images created to provoke political thought, bringing much laughter into the homes of Chicagoans for many years. A truly lovely piece of Chicago history from the turn of the century.
