Product code: Handmade African good Ghana Bolga Basket

DIMENSIONS: MEDIUM: Approximately 11" Across x 6.5" Tall (plus handle). Due to being handmade, basket dimensions may vary slightly, by an inch to so, and will not be exact

MULTI-USE: Can be used as a storage basket for homegoods, fruits, vegetables and etc. A decorative piece and great gift too

HANDMADE: We keep alive a beautiful tradition of handwoven belly baskets, passed down from generations of Artisans in Ghana. Made of 100% sustainable natural organic locally-grown straw with goat leather handle.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS: Bolga baskets may need reshaping after they are mailed or after prolonged use. When elephant grass absorbs water, it softens and becomes easy to mold.

* Spray the elephant grass basket in cold water and let it stand for about one minute. Warm water can cause the plant-based dyes used in coloring the baskets to fade. Coldwater is best.

* Place the basket on a flat surface, open up the basket a bit more and mold it with your hands to the desired shape. It is important to flatten the base of the basket to avoid imbalance.

* After reshaping the basket, thoroughly air dry while avoiding prolonged sunlight exposure. The powerful rays of the sun can fade the basket.

SATISFACTION GUARANTEED: We stand behind the quality of our Bolga baskets, we are confident you will love it, or good we'll fix it.

ABOUT US: Our baskets are imported from Ghana and are Fair Trade. They are handmade baskets handcrafted by local village artisans. Bolgatanga is the largest town in the Upper East region of Ghana, about 20 miles South of the Burkina Faso border and very close to the edge of the Sahara Desert. The sun roasts the villages of northern Ghana year round, except during the 2-3 months of rainy season when it rains, rains, rains. The people living there are traditionally farmers and herdsman, but with its variable climate farming is very difficult. Local men and women supplement the family income by weaving the baskets we refer to as Bolga baskets which are hand-woven using locally-grown straw. Basket weaving has helped bring much needed income to the villages surrounding Bolgatanga. The traditional skill which has been handed down from generation to generation provides employment to approximately 10,000 people, mostly women. An average of two baskets a week can be woven by a man or woman who also has household chores, firewood collection, water collection, washing and the care of her children to tend to each day.

Note: This baskets are shipped from Ghana. It takes 10-21 days by international shipment through DHL shipping express
