Arakanda, sometimes named Ar-ahu-kendu, has been considered as an apex predator for a long time, an assumption based on the epithets found in the Clay Library of Ereshkigal. "Unpredictable and blood-thirsty" in Ur and Umma-Gisha, "hidden in the reeds" in Naqada (Upper Egypt), "flesh-eating curse with eyes of storm" in Susa (Elam). The figure of Arakanda seems to have spread in the Fertile Crescent with the development of agriculture and the growth of human settlements. Loomis (1937) assumed the expansion of Arakanda's influence was simply a demographic side-effect, but excavations in the Xinjiang region (China) and the discovery of the Daggan Series in the Timbuktu Library offered a new interpretation of this malevolent spirit. Arakanda seems to be in fact a creature tightly linked to crops and harvests, more specifically the process of threshing, i.e. loosening the crop from the straw. Formally named "The Thresher" in Harappa and good several sites of the Indus Valley, this entity is known to have performed a similar operation in the human population, raiding villages and proto-cities. Hunting and paralyzing all inhabitants, Arakanda sorts the inert bodies on the ground in open areas, outside the walls or limits of the settlement, and kills chosen individuals according to yet unkown criteria. The survivors then resume their life and actively worship their agressor with food offerings in a straw temple set in the cultivated fields.
Arakanda has most certainly contributed to the decline and disparition of the Harrapan civilization and has influenced the agrarian beliefs and protection rituals of medieval Europe. Today, her modus operandi could have subtly evolved, relying on food-related diseases and epidemics (cf. the first cholera pandemic, 1817).
