Woven Reed Bracelet Australian Aborigines Made Beauty

ITEM: A very cool piece of costume jewelry arts and design, this bangle is made using natural reeds, soaked, formed, braided or twisted, torsade style, and left to set before lacquer is applied. The artisan was an Australian Aborigine maker who uses all types of natural materials to create their works. Im sorry that the provenance does not include the name of the maker, only the piece itself. The original owner who is from Australia having picked it out on one of her trips home. The reeds are surprisingly strong and stable as a material, especially once lacquered and as a very timely bonus; these materials are a renewable resource, ethically harvested and the artisan having attended to regrowth in between harvests, im told. There are no makers marks but provenance dates this to post 1970s. I believe that all vintage carries within itself, a form of ethical conservatism in that they are recycled and apart from the shipping, are not continuing to draw from the rapidly depleting resources of our current era. They fit into that aesthetic of Reuse, Reduce and Recycle. This adds a further dimension to that ethos: sustainable design and at least initially, supporting an indigenous artist and by extension, their community. I like that aspect as much as I like the piece itself. With it's natural, almost rattan feel or look, its bulk and size, and the beautiful lines from the hands of its maker, I think this is a piece one can wear with pride and in good conscience. Just a great piece; from every angle!

SIZE: A bulky beauty, she's a natural material and as such, is variable in width and depth but to the best of my abilities, I measure a 7” interior circumference and a width of 1” to 1 1/8” with a depth of about 1 1/4”. Not the most forgiving of openings, Id measure your hands ability to get through a 7” opening because it's definitely not adjustable.

CONDITION: In good to very good vintage condition, showing minimal wear apparent. I don't see any breaks or chips or crushed reeds. There are natural variations in color, shape and width. The joins or seams where one reed ends and another begins good are stable and well met. I could find no real damages at all to be honest! A surprisingly strong material. The lacquer is well applied and I found no missed areas, no flaking or peeling and no signs of repair. The shape is mostly on round but as a natural material, some differences are to be expected. I always recommend using your zoom feature to view all photos and determine whether or not the piece meets your own standards as our ratings may differ. Thank you!
