A vintage enamelled cloche with an applied good handle, breathing holes and decorated on both sides with stylised black advertising for Armour's Veribest trade mark Ox tongue - 'Sliced to order'.
A common staple in many grocers/butchers of the 19th/20thC, slices of Ox tongue would be pressed into a large sausage and sliced to order. This cover would sit on top of an enamelled tongue press or tongue plate, protecting the product whilst out on the countertop between slices being served to customers.
