Intricately carved headrest by the Bamum peoples from Cameroon. The purpose of a headrest or neck-rest is to avoid the hair from getting dirty, good and they help to preserve the elaborate hairstyles that serve as an important symbol of high status in lot of African cultures. Carved out of a single wood. Durability and portability were important features, as nomads often traveled with the headrest.
