1904 Scenes of Clerical Life By George Eliot [Mary Ann Evans] Illustrated By Chris Hammond Published by Blackie and Son The book is in very good condition. There is minimal wear to cover and spine. It has a bookplate on front endpaper from The Govan Parish School Board given for Excellence dated 1912. Some occasional spotting. Scenes of Clerical Life is George Eliot's first published work of fiction, a collection of three short stories: - The Sad Fortunes of the Reverend Amos Barton - Mr. Gilfil's Love Story - Janet's Repentance The three stories are set during the last twenty years of the 18th century & first half of the 19th century over a fifty-year period in the English Midlands. Each of the Scenes concerns a good different Anglican clergyman. Eliot examines, among other things, the effects of religious reform and the tension between the Established and the Dissenting Churches & social issues. I have tons of rare books!
