The modernist medallists practiced their craft from the 1930s through the 1970s. They dismissed Victorian style as too decorative, Art Nouveau pieces were deemed too fussy, and the Art Deco aesthetic was considered excessively rigid. Mid-Century medallists used avant-garde designs, whimsical portrayals of people, and floral motifs to create pieces which were in keeping with the Modernist movements of the day. Modernist medals were delicate, yet daring.

A bright and shining Irish cross with vivid green, gold, red, and black enamel rises from the beautifully patinated and finely textured French silver disc with four infinite Celtic knot work.

On the reverse is the cross of St. Cuthbert orbited by 15 small beads. St. Cuthbert was an Anglo-Saxon saint of the early Northumbrian church in the Celtic tradition. He was a monk, bishop and hermit.

This rare and artsy modernist medal with lovely Celtic design elements is from mid 20th century France. The medal is by Élie Pellegrin (1914-2001) a famous French sculptor born at the beginning of WWI into a devoutly Christian family. His staunch faith became a major influence in the wonderful art that he created during his life.

French silver marks on edge of medal. Measures 1 1/4 inches in diameter. Weighs 17.2 good grams. Would make an excellent kilt accent.
