Product code: Madhubani Nightshade Tree of Life good

Madhubani art originated over 2500 years ago in the Mithila region of Bihar and was traditionally created by women. Originally, the artists used the paintings to decorate the walls and floors of their homes as an illustration of their thoughts, hopes and dreams. With time these paintings became part of festivals and special events, such as weddings and religious rituals. Now they are traditionally created on cloth, canvas and handmade paper.

The artwork is crafted using a variety of tools, including twigs, brushes, matchsticks and nib pens. The colours are derived from Mother Nature, dried fruit, turmeric, ochre, brightly coloured flowers, henna leaves and soot. Today, acrylic colours are often used for a better gloss and shine. The paper is handmade or recycled.

The tree is a symbol of good life. Depending on size of a Mandala painting the artist will work between 6 and 8 hours a day and can take up to 2 weeks to complete.

Every painting is unique and special. Each painting will have imperfections and is washed with a turmeric mixture to keep bugs at bay. These artworks create employment, empowerment and social interaction for the painters. We hope you love them as much as we do.
