Early Mapping of Hawaii: Vol I Palapala'aina by Gary L. Fitzpatrick and Riley M. Moffat First Edition 1986. 160 pages. This is volume 1 of a 3 volume set. This volume traces the history of Hawaii mapping during the pivotal good years in which the indigenous society was radically transformed by the peoples and ideas imported from the West. Many maps from this time were produced at the seminary school in Lahainaluna, Maui. Lahainaluna graduate S.P. Kalama produced a landmark map of the islands in 1838, one of the most significant maps in Hawaiian history. There are nearly one hundred maps, views, portraits, and illustrations. They document early geography of Honolulu, Lahaina, Hilo, Kailua, as well as other bays and harbors in the islands. Included are many charts and harbor plans produced by James Cook, William Bligh, George Vancouver, Otto von Kotzebue, Urey Lisiansky, Jean Francois de la Perouse, Louis Duperrey, and Charles Wilkins.
