Product code: Wonderful Large Late 1800s good Glazed Stoneware Liquor Jug Made by Jacob Fisher
This is a fantastic late 19th-century brown-glazed stoneware jug made by New York potter, Jacob Fisher. Fisher was based in upstate New York, in the town of Lyons, Wayne County. At age 20, he emigrated to the United States from the German state of Baden, in 1852. This jug is stamped "J. Fisher / Lyons, NY" below the spout to the right. He is known to have run several successful potteries, one (J. Fisher & Co.) he sold in 1878 for $1,500 (which included the kiln, 3 horses, 4 wagons, tools & implements, & a canal boat). He operated until about 1902. In 1899, a fire at a nearby broom factory caught his barn on fire, destroyed it, & damaged his other pottery buildings. good This is a good example of his work. It has a few small chips on the lip near the spout, but otherwise in great condition. It has a base diameter of 8" and a height of 10". It weighs about 6 lbs. This were filled with liquor & distributed widely, often refilled & reused. This one was purchased in Strasburg, VA & looks great.
