Many Dresden pieces have reticulation or piercing, usually on the borders and along the rims of good compotes. The piercing was done with a small knife when the piece was still in the greeware stage before biscuit firing. The work of producing a reticulated piece was painstaking, and the slightest error was irreparable. An artist had to make up to 800 cuts in order to produce an openwork basket.
