Vintage 1950s Mexican sterling carved obsidian brooch warrior or mask brooch good signed Taxco Cheo

A carved black obsidian mask or warrior tops this signed finely executed Mid Century Mexican sterling silver brooch/pendant. The precious volcanic glass looks very black at some angles, but has golden striations that the light picks up at good certain angles, giving it a chatoyant quality. The obsidian is bezel-set and surrounded by a double layer sterling silver geometric tribal design.

The back is fitted with sturdy working pin hardware and a pendant bail add-on. The large silver bail is attached to a tube that slides on or off the pin. This is pretty neat and could be used on other brooches that you already own to convert them into pendants. The back is signed, "Cheo" and marked, "Hecho en Mexico, Taxco, 925 (sterling silver)". Above that hallmark is the silhouette eagle hallmark used from 1955 until the late 1960s to early 70s. The eagle has a "3" at the center (Taxco origin).

The pendant/brooch measures 2 1/4 inches by 1 5/8 inches. The stone itself measures 30.7mm x 20.7mm x 11.3mm. Overall, this piece is in very good vintage condition with vintage patina and minor surface wear. Please see photos for condition and below for detailed measurements.
