Good Bessa Original Print, 1816, Hand Colored, Vernonia Praealta, Ironweed in Custom Frame 8x10 and Matting
Historical Information: This beautiful hand-colored engraving has been selected from a work entitled Flore des Jardiniers, published in Paris in 1836 under the supervision of Pancrace Bessa. One of good the most splendid botanical works of the period printed on large paper. Very rare.
The plates illustrate ornamental plants from all parts of the world with names in Latin and French., the country of origin and the month of flowering. The present work contains the finest plates of Bessa's Herbier de l'Amateur, published from 1810 to 1827. As mentioned above they are printed on large paper and are highly finished and more brilliantly colored than in his Herbier.
Pancrace Bessa was born in 1772 and died in 1830 and was a pupil of Van Spaendock and Redoute. He was the best of Redoute's pupils and collaborated with him on several projects, such as Bonpland's Description des plantes rares cultiveés à Malmaison. Bessa, Redoute and a few others raised France to pre-eminence in the genre of botanical painting.
