The Moors and Christians of Alcoy, are a party that takes place in the city of Alcoy (Alicante), Valencian Community, Spain. They include the representation of the struggle between two sides, Muslim and Christian. They have their origin in the Battle of Alcoy produced in 1276 at the gates of the city and which is traditionally supposed to have faced the inhabitants of Alcoy with the troops of the Muslim leader Al-Azraq. Legend has it that at the key moment of the battle the figure of St. George appeared on the back of a horse on the city walls and that his figure decided the outcome of the battle.
For this reason, St. George was also appointed patron of these holidays and festivities are celebrated in his honor on April 23. As part of these celebrations in honor of St. George, the Moors and Christians are organized. These festivities began, according to historical documents, since 1511.
