Product code: Kewpie Dolls, Antique Bride and Groom, 3-1/2", Wedding Cake Toppers, Porcelain Bisque, Crepe Paper Garments, Vintage Wedding, good 1910's

An antique pair of Bride and Groom Kewpie dolls from the early 1900's. Box with latch is included with the dolls. Groom is marked "Japan" on his back. Made of porcelain bisque with clothing of crepe paper. Kewpie dolls were first produced as bisque in Waltershausen, Germany beginning in 1912 and became extremely popular in the early 20th century. Composition versions were introduced in the 1920's.

Originally appearing in the form of magazine illustrations between 1905 and 1909, Kewpie dolls made their appearance in 1913 in a design patented by Rose Cecil O'Neill (1874-1944). The dolls were a popular novelty item, often associated with carnivals and country fairs, where they were given as prizes. The Kewpie doll is one of the earliest and most successful examples of a mass-marketed toy. It has since become a sought-after collectible and an enduring symbol of "cuteness."

Dimensions: Height: 3-1/2"

Condition: Expected condition due to age and use. The crepe paper clothing, especially on the groom is delicate and shredding. The groom is missing his arms which were originally attached with string. The bride's arms are attached but do hang away from her body, secured by string.
