Apatosaurus, one of the larger members of the clade called Sauropods, roamed over some areas in western North America during the Jurassic Period, about 151 million years ago. It could grow to 75 feet in length. This specimen is from the Morrison Formation in central Montana.

Here is a genuine fossil piece of rib bone from an Apatosaurus. It measures about 4.5 inches at the longest diagonal measurement. It is about 2.5" by 2.7" (varies). It is one solid piece, not gued together. The specimen weighs 9.45 oz.

Most Jurassic fossils are more rock-like than Cretaceous fossils, and many don't look much like fossils. However, this piece clearly looks like one, with great definition all around the bone.

Sauropods were huge animals that walked on 4 sturdy pillar-like legs. They had very long necks, small heads, long tails and were plant-eaters. The animal on the Sinclair gas logo is of a Sauropod.

Apatosaurus is one of the most popular of the Sauropods, along with such genera as Brontosaurus (yes, it is a recognized genus again), Brachiosaurus, and Diplodocus For years, many thought Brontosaurus and Apatosaurus were the same genus, but recent comparisons have shown Apatosaurus to be much larger, with a thicker, lower set neck, with some skull differences as well. Named in 1877 by Charles Marsh, Apatosaurus fossils are found in Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, New Mexico and Oklahoma, and a few in Montana. Apatosaurus are in a number of Jurassic Park and Jurassic World movies.

We have been working with fossils and minerals for many years, and we have seen hundreds of very nice-looking COA's, some that are wrong, mis-describing a specimen. In addition, the person selling the item is often the one who writes the COA (potential conflict of interest). Finally, a COA, without a photo of the exact specimen on the COA itself, is worthless, as it can later be placed next to any other fossil or mineral. We suggest that in addition to relying on a COA, that people read and study the subject.
