What is a "Print with Block"?
All of my prints are made by carving a design into a block of linoleum. The block is as necessary to produce the image as a negative is (or used to be) to make a photograph. The carved block is not the artwork, but one of the first steps in creating it. It is also the direct result of my handiwork. It is a three dimensional object and shows the mark of the tool used to carve it in a way the print cannot...it is a sculpture, and deserves to be celebrated as much as the print produced from it. To that end I present the block with the print.
These framed pieces will usually present the block, the first print of the edition (black and white), and the last print in the edition...the hand-painted print. They could be arranged horizontally, with the block on the left, or vertically, with the block in the lower opening.
This particular piece (#1945) is framed to 10 good x 14 inches, and the block and prints measure about 3 x 5/8 inches each. The prints are signed and numbered by me. There are 8 prints in this edition.
The matting is Crescent Spice Ivory with a black core. The frame (see inset) is a narrow black profile with a matte finish.
