There is something so frightening and yet fascinating about the masks worn by Plague Doctors during plague epidemic , starting with the Black Death. The mask had glass good goggles and a beak shaped cone ( measuring 1/2 a foot long ). This beak was filled with aromatic herbs and straw designed to protect them from the miasmatic bad air they believed spread the disease. One can only imagine the horror of living in those times, let alone being ill and having the Doctor show up looking like that!
In Australia when I originally made this we had just finished flu season ( which admittedly was a fairly bad year ) and all the fear mongering and speculation about future epidemics that went with it ( little did we know then that COVID was around the corner ) The atmosphere providing the inspiration and with Halloween on the horizon I decided to make my son and I plague masks to go trick or treating in. This lead to a long weekend playing with plasticine , plaster, wire and other items to create this disturbing addition to the Littlebubble family of oddities.
I made a silicone mold of the original piece and have recast it in solid resin with a brass hook on the reverse for hanging. It has then been coated in bronze with a Japanese brown patina applied by hand to bring out more of its character and texture. Top to bottom it measures approx. 20cm ( 8inch) the beak extends 12cm (5") from the wall. This listing is for 1 plague mask sculpture.
A unique addition to the door of your medicine cabinet or any other place in the home which requires a new angle of perception. Certainly a Halloween decoration no one else will have!
