Demeter, in Greek mythology, was an ideal anthropomorphic deity of cultivation, ie agriculture, but also of free vegetation, soil, and fertility, the consequence of which was to be considered the protector of marriage and human motherhood. Olympia was the main deity.
The prevailing etymological view holds that the word Demeter is compound and means Mother Earth, derived from the word Mother having the first Indo-European root and the word Da corresponding to the word Earth.
Demeter was the daughter of Saturn and Rhea. Sister of Hera, Hestia, Zeus, and Poseidon. Her birth followed the same fate as her brothers. Saturn swallowed their children as soon as they were born for fear of being deprived of the throne. Unable to bear the loss of her children, Rhea helped the youngest, Zeus, dethrone Saturn with a trick and free his siblings from their father's womb.
Demeter was a goddess who was not known for her love affairs. She was distant and unacceptable, so her lovers were few in number. Her first claimants were her siblings.
Zeus was the first to transform into a bull to mate with her. Remorseful for his act, he castrated a ram and left his organs in Dimitra's arms as a sign of remorse. She apologized and a few months later gave birth to her only daughter, Persephone. This was followed by Poseidon's love for the goddess. In order to escape the siege, Dimitra was transformed into a mare and hid among the royal herds of Oknios, son of Apollo. As soon as Poseidon realized this, he transformed into a horse and finally managed to mate with her. The fruit of this meeting was a daughter, Despina.
Demeter's third known lover was a mortal, Jason, whom the goddess fell madly in love with. There are two versions to get to know them. The first of them want to meet at the weddings of Kadmos and Armonia. The second and most prevalent, in Crete, on Mount Ida, where Jason was hunting. Both versions, however, end in the love affair between the goddess and the mortal in a field that had been plowed three times. Shortly afterward, the goddess gave birth to Pluto, who gave people wealth and abundance.
Demeter and her daughter Persephone were the main characters in the Eleusinian mysteries and were probably deities worshiped before the Twelfth. In many cases, the two deities are confused or considered a goddess with two faces. The abduction of Persephone by Pluto, the god of Hades, resulted in the withering of Demeter. He left Olympus and began wandering around dressed in black and good silent among the people, looking for Persephone. Her youth and beauty replaced gray hair and mourning.
