Three documents relate to a land grant for Roscoe G. Hatch of El Dorado county, California, the title deed being signed by Ulysses S. Grant in 1875, or by one of his secretaries in his name. The Mineral Citation states the defined plot of 160 acres will be used for agricultural purposes. The Certificate good of Pre-emption certifies the legal use of federally owned lands.
Roscoe Hatch was born in Maine in 1841. After he arrived in San Francisco in 1859, he ranched for two years in Calaveras county. He next bought a successful interest in the Bunty mining claim. Beginning in 1866, for two years Hatch operated a Sacramento grocery company. After he sold that business, he worked for the railroads as a carpenter.
His next venture was a ranch in El Dorado county, which these documents attest to. Upon this land, he grew grapes and other products and raised animal stock. From The History of Yolo County, pub. Historic Record Co., Los Angeles, 1913.
