The volcanic stone anafre were made by artisans who live at the skirt of the active volcano called Popocatepetl in Puebla, Mexico. The artisans gather the stone from the foot of the active volcano, transport and hand carve it to give it shape. Volcanic stone work has been a tradition for generations.
The area of the Popocatepetl volcano skirt is abundant with minerals and other natural resources. Volcanic rock has been used by the natives in Mexico for hundreds of years for different purposes including for culinary and health.
Popocatepetl in nahuatl means the “smoking mountain”. In Aztec mythology, Popocatepetl, and the mountain next to it, Iztaccíhuatl (sleeping woman) were once lovers. Popocatepetl, a warrior and Iztaccíhuatl, a beautiful princess. Iztaccíhuatl was killed while Popocatepetl was away. When he returned, he found her dead. He took her lifeless body to a mountain. He cried himself to death at her feet while he burned copal blanco (white copal). It is said that every time Popocatepetl erupts, he is crying for his beloved Iztaccíhuatl.
