“Death”
This print is the third block in an ongoing project: HIGH LONESOME. Basically, I'm ever so very slowly writing a novel and illustrating it with illuminated-manuscript-style relief prints that use both text and image. This print is one of a series good of 12-24 blocks.
Shown here is Death. Death and Spider are the oldest Gods on Ghost Mountain, sisters and perfect complements to each other. Death performs the harvest that provides Spider with her fiber to spin the world. In exchange, Death asks Spider to weave a special garment:
“Sister Spider, spin me a dressing gown / Woven from spent souls/ and trimmed with last breaths / Make it soft and light / For I am a kindness / in these cruel woods. / Stitch me a brocade of stars / the dust of man remade / For I am the final flame / the luminous spectre / who holds the friar's lantern / Drawing all life to my warmth / and my eternal embrace / A love light that will / never go out .”
The print was created from a hand-carved linoleum block and printed with oil based relief inks on handmade papers. Limited variable edition of 100, signed and dated.
