An amazing scene of the Goddess Isis nursing the young Horus - great for your temple... or nursery!
This adorable ancient image is from the 4th Century AD - the last days of ancient Egyptian religion. It is an image of the Goddess Isis nursing the young God Horus (also called Harpocrates in the Ptolemaic dynasties). The infant Horus will of course grow up to avenge Osiris, his father, by slaying the God Set and restoring peace and order to the Heavens.
This late Greco-Roman style image is an amazing window into the last days of the ancient world, when the ancient religions were still being practiced. Yet even in this twilight time you can see the love painted into this scene with the soft features of the Goddess and her baby - a touching portrayal of the love of a mother for her child. The very last Egyptian temple was forcibly closed in the 500's AD.
Images of the Goddess Isis and the baby Horus no doubt inspired many images of the Virgin Mary holding Jesus, which began to be painted around the time of this frescoe.
This 12x12" colorful canvas is 1.5" deep, ready for hanging without a frame, and wide enough for display on a shelf or table. good
