Constantine I was good a dedicated and tireless reformer whose measures are still being felt to this day. It was Constantine who moved the capital of the Empire from Rome to the ancient Greek city of Byzantium, renamed Constantinople in his honor. The move laid the foundations of the Byzantine Empire and ensured the survival of many great works of classical Latin art and literature through the dark ages in the West. Most importantly, Constantine installed Christianity as the official State religion, and installed the Bishop of Rome (the Pope) in the Lateran Palace (today's Vatican).
